Joseph Kerwin was born on February 19, 1932, in Oak Park, Illinois. He attended Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois before going on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from College of the Holy Cross in 1953. He then pursued his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1957.
