Brad Ausmus was born on April 14, 1969, in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended Dartmouth College where he played college baseball. Ausmus was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 48th round of the 1987 MLB Draft but did not sign. He was later drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 48th round of the 1988 MLB Draft and signed with them.
