Career

Martinez was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 1983 MLB Draft. He made his Major League debut with the Cubs in 1986 and went on to have a successful 16-year career as an outfielder for various teams, including the Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Atlanta Braves.

After retiring as a player, Martinez transitioned into coaching. He served as a bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2008 to 2014 and was part of the coaching staff that led the team to the World Series in 2008. In 2015, Martinez joined the coaching staff of the Chicago Cubs as their bench coach under manager Joe Maddon.

In October 2017, Martinez was named the manager of the Washington Nationals. He led the team to their first World Series championship in franchise history in 2019.
