Dirk Dries David Damiaan Frimout was born on March 21, 1941, in Poperinge, Belgium. He studied electromechanical engineering at the University of Ghent, where he obtained his master's degree in 1963. Frimout later earned a Ph.D. in applied physics from the same university in 1970.
