Gregg Marshall was born on February 27, 1963, in Greenwood, South Carolina. He attended Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia, where he played basketball. After graduating from Fork Union, Marshall went on to attend Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he played basketball for the Yellow Jackets.
