After completing his medical degree, Jerry Linenger served as a flight surgeon with the United States Navy. In 1992, he was selected by NASA to join the astronaut corps. Linenger made his first spaceflight aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1994 as a mission specialist. He then spent five months aboard the Russian space station Mir as part of the NASA-4 mission in 1997.

During his time on Mir, Linenger faced numerous challenges, including a fire that broke out on the station. Despite these difficulties, he successfully completed his mission and returned safely to Earth. In total, Linenger spent 132 days in space and conducted multiple scientific experiments.

After leaving NASA, Linenger continued his career in aerospace as a consultant and speaker. He has also written several books about his experiences in space, including "Off The Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir."
