Born on October 2, 1949, in the Bronx, New York, Jim Larranaga developed a passion for basketball at a young age. He attended Archbishop Molloy High School where he excelled as a player, leading him to play college basketball at Providence College.
After graduating from Providence in 1971, Larranaga began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He then moved on to become the head coach at American International College before landing his first Division I head coaching job at Bowling Green State University in 1986.
